Fourth of July Blog Hop Winners!

Hey All!

I was sad that not too many people had pet pix for me, but that's okay. I know that the holiday is over, and technically, so is the Blog Hop.  Now all that's left is to announce the winners.

So, why don't I do that? No reason at all--Here you go:

The winner of 3 books from any of my series: Wulf

The winner of a necklace (or if she'd rather claim a book or 2) ceagles

And the surprise winner: Patricia--choose any one of my published books

just email me and let me know which books you'd like and in which electronic format.

And because I promised it the other day, here's a picture of Roland, my male cat, and Bear, my sister's dog, hanging out together.

There are many who believe that Roland belongs in a cage.

Not Bear of course--she believes in free will and letting it all hang out.

Blog Hop post #6.5

Hey!

Anyone want to send me some pics of their pets?

Maybe some 4th of July shots, too?

I think it'd be a ton of fun to put them up here tonight and tomorrow. We can share the fun! You've seen all my fuzzy and feathery roommates.

Let's see yours! Send your pictures to: jjmassa@gmail.com

Blog Hope Post #6

Happy Fourth of July Hoppers!

How's every little thing going? Anyone cooking hotdogs on the grill? Steaks?

I know the beaches are open, so lots of folks are probably hot, wet, and sandy right now. It's crazy how insidious sand is, isn't it. It just works its way in, no matter how well covered you are. Add a handful of suntan oil and you'll never get it off.

Well, sand or no sand, I love the beach. I love it most in the off-season, of course. Still, I love the birds, the ocean, the smell, and the feeling of being right there where a whole amazing world begins. It seems like there are worlds upon worlds in the ocean. I just don’t know how anyone could live inland. I'd feel trapped. Odd, huh?

Of course, nowhere is completely safe and comfortable, huh?  I love birds, but seagulls have a mean streak. Or so I've heard.

I love boats, sailing, the ocean, Finding Nemo, and all sorts of things, but I guess it never hurts to remember to watch what you're doing, huh? "Mine!" Mine, mine, mine!" LOL

Okay, enough about that. Let's talk about other stuff. I showed you all the cover for Art & Soul.

Here's the blurb:
Art & Soul
By J.J. Massa
Oliver Crane was a success. He enjoyed making movies-- losing himself in a new role every few months. Acting allowed him to express so many facets of his nature. Dark and intense, he lived his work as the screen's ideal leading man. What woman wouldn't want to spend the night in his bed? For that matter, how many men could say they didn't want him?
Not Thorbjörn  Frisk. Or he wouldn’t deny it, if anyone bothered to ask him. A Swedish artist who emigrated to America in his late teens, Tor often lost himself in his work, avoiding the harsh realities of impatient and intolerant people who had no use for a stuttering sculptor who barely spoke English.
Both men invested his very soul into his art. What would it cost them in the end?
~
You know how much I love the accents--and poor Tor, he's all accent. He's not a shrinking violet, but he's out of his league here. As it happens, so is Oliver, but he doesn't like to own up to weakness. He doesn't want to own up to finding a man attractive, either. It looks like a bumpy road ahead for these guys, doesn't it?

As with everything else, I'm a bit behind. But never fear, I WILL get my act together. Pinky swear.

I'll also be back later. I'm not doing anything much for this holiday. I guess, mostly, I'm thanking God, our forefathers, and my lucky stars for my freedom to do nothing if that's what I want.

You guys take care.

Blog Hop Post #5

It's almost Wednesday! Well, technically, it is Wednesday, isn't it? I keep the craziest hours. No matter how early I go to bed, or how late, it seems like I've done it wrong every time. I guess you could say that I'm always up with the birds in the morning.

I'm happy to hear that I'm not the only bird lover around. I guess I knew that I wasn't- -after all, there are forums, countless websites, and an unholy number of breeders out there.

I'd like to tell you that all of my critters live in perfect harmony, but I know that nobody would by that. In fact, Banana's favorite game is trying to find the kitty when one of them jumps on top of his cage.

Thoughtfully, he was quick to teach Baker the game, as well. While Baker is a much smaller bird, he can clamp that little beak of his tighter than a little bear trap.

Banana and Bear do work together to repel any potential invaders that hope to breach our little apartment. Together, they're unstoppable. And if Bear is upset by something outside, Banana is quick to ask, "What's wrong, Bear?" or "What's going on?"

Of course, I've already told you how annoying Roland can be when he pesters the other cats. He likes to wait for them outside of the kitty litter closet. It makes for a whole houseful of nervous cats. I've already told you about KitKat and her short fuse where her brother is concerned. The bald and bare patches on Roland's face are only now beginning to heal.

Still, Roland has made a friend in Bear, and he's very patient with her--until he's not. My sister said she had a picture of the two together, but it seems to be lost to the mists of time.

Sometimes it feels like the Ark on a bad day over here. The best you can do is keep a sense of humor, right?

Anyway, I promised I'd talk about one of the books whose cover I posted yesterday. This cover is for Figuratively Speaking. I just never thought this book would give me such challenges. It's almost ready, though, so look for it in a few days.

Here's the blurb:

Figuratively Speaking
by J.J. Massa
For many years, Alyssa managed to live under the radar. She scraped by, hiding who she was and what she could do the best she could, even though she didn't exactly know why anymore.
One thing she does know--happily-ever-afters don't just happen. Sometimes you have to give them a hand. Now and then, they just show up...figuratively speaking, that is.
 ~~

Figuratively Speaking tells the story of Nikodemos Kosmapoulos and Alyssa Lange, with a lot of input from Bradley Bolanger, Nik's uncle by marriage. Who is he to Alyssa? Well, she calls him "Grandfather," but Nik doesn't believe that for a second.

What I like about Alyssa is that she's a little tough and a little vulnerable. So is Nik, but he's fighting it tooth and nail. And Bradley is no slouch, either. He's the perfect old guy...or I think so, anyway.

And that's it for today, folks. It looks like we've got about 17 or so entries, and about 8 different people commenting. That's just off the top of my head though. I'll fill you in tomorrow.

Blog Hop Post # 4

It's after six on Tuesday! Where did the day go? My daughter stopped in and I enjoyed a nice visit with her. I wrote a bit...not nearly enough, played with the dog and the birds--the cats play when they want to.

I'm not the boss of them.

Oh, well. This is another chance to win, folks. We already have a handful of Hoppers entered to win any three stories from one of my series and a pair of earrings or a necklace. Just remember, 1 comment = 1 entry. 2 comments = 2 entries, and so on.

I'm going to count those folks who just said "thanks" from yesterday and before, since I didn't specify. From now on, I'd like you to tell me a little about your pets, past or present. Or tell me about your Fourth of July Plans. Tell me what you like to read--anything along those lines will do. That's it. A few words will do, as long as they string together to make a sentence about one of those things I mentioned.

Don't make me sic the wildlife on you. Those cats are merciless. We won't even talk about the rest of the animal kingdom...

Yesterday, I told you that I'd share a little bit from upcoming books with you. I stuck three covers on the blog--the first one was 2 Hot 2 Handle--it's a duet with Ashley Marie Lucas. This is going to be a fun little book. Or big book, as the case may be.

Ashley's story is called Revenge is Best Served Hot -- It's a lot of fun, I think you'll like it. Her main characters are Jamie and Alexander, and a less likely couple would be hard to find. I don’t think I'm giving anything away here when I say that Jamie is a brat. He's mischievous through and through and goal oriented like you would not believe. Poor Alexander. I really don't know if he can keep up…neither does he, it turns out. You really don't want to pass this one up, folks. It's M/m gold.

Revenge is Best Served Hot
by Ashley Marie Lucas

Here's her blurb:
Jamie has been working at Endotronics  for over 15 years. He likes order in and out of his personal life. When  Endotronics changes management and the handsome yet demanding Alexander Rydon takes over  he soon becomes the bane of Jamie's life.--A man he cannot please at work, but hungers to please in bed.

Alexander is Jamie’s wet dream come alive.  Tall, dark, and handsome, the only thing wrong with the man is he seems to hate Jamie.  Everything Jamie does is wrong.  Still, Jamie is determined to prove he can do his job better than anyone. When this doesn’t work he decides revenge is in order. Revenge of the hot and sweaty variety.  Jamie knows his days at Endotronics are numbered, so he intends to make an exit from the company Alexander will never forget.

My story is a bit different from hers. It's called A Friend in Need. As usual, there are a handful of characters that populate my little world, but Emrys Neil and Tyson Smyth are the main attractions. It starts out as a long-distance romance in the making, and grows from there. Needless to say, there's a lot more to the story than that, but every romance has its own tug-of-war going on, doesn't it?

A Friend in Need
by J.J. Massa

Here's my blurb:
Tyson Smyth had never wanted to be a lawyer--that had been his parents' decision. For so long, he tried to fit the mold they'd formed for him: Ivy League elite, dutiful scion of an old and respected line of lawyers, judges, and politicians… He hated it. Hated his job, hated his life. Now that he was estranged from his family, why was he still living their dream?

The moment he'd clapped eyes on Tyson Smyth, Emrys wanted him. It didn't help that the young man had a bit of a crush on him. Going against his his heart's dictates, Emrys let Tyson go without revealing his feelings. Now, the other lawyer was older, wiser, knew what he wanted. Would he want Emrys by his side? In his bed? He'd always believed that friends made the best lovers, and he had to start somewhere, right? He needed Tyson in his life. Needed him.

A friend in need is a friend indeed, right?

~

I'll tell you more about another one of my books in just a bit.

See you soon

Blog Hop Post #3

How's it going out there, Hoppers?

Things are clipping right along over here. I did finally get my overdue column up for NovelSpot. I really enjoy it because I get a chance to research all sorts of things I've wondered about for so long. Not only that, I feel a lot smarter when I understand all those obscure references that far more intelligent authors use.

Never mind about that, I intended to introduce you to my remaining four-legged roommates. After that, I'll give you a few little snippets of different books.

This grand old girl is Gabrielle--at the time of her naming, Xena was apparently on television, and my niece was about six, so Gabrielle it was. Needless to say, she's called Gabby by one and all. She's in the twilight of her years now, and without all that hair, she'd be a little bag of bones. Poor old girl, I'm sure she thinks she's been punished: living in an apartment in New Jersey and she can't even go outside. Not only that, but the other cats are bullies. (It's true--my cats are bullies. I'm not proud of it, but there you go)

Next we have little Sterlyn. She's about a third the size of KitKat, but don't let that fool you. She has a voice on her that just won't quit--she's a Siamese, in case you couldn't tell. It's lucky that she's so small, since it makes it easier for her to make the quick getaways and tight escapes.

Gabby adopted her when my sister got Sterlyn for my niece. My niece promptly made sure that Sterlyn was completely spoiled and stayed that way. Every now and then, Gabby pins her down and cleans her like a soccer mom with a dirty toddler. Bath time can be quite the trial around here.

Last, but not least, we have Little Bear. She's a mix of Mastiff, German Sheppard, and probably a bit of Labrador retriever in there, too. She's a good girl, and quite playful, as you can tell by her photo. The cats don't always want to play with her, but she won't let a little thing like that stop her. At first, KitKat scared her to death. Nowadays, though, KitKat has relaxed with her, and Bear loves to pounce. Her best friend as a puppy was a very large stray cat. She and Roland run around here hiding and chasing each other. They're perfect together, whether Roland knows it or not.

I figured that, for tonight, I'd put up a few covers of books on the way--Figuratively Speaking really WILL be out soon, honest and for true! --And tomorrow, I'll give you some info about these books and maybe some excerpts if you're interested.

So, with no further adieu:

Blog Hop post #2

I'm sure I could come up with some kind of impressive title for this post--no..not really. So this is my second Blog Hop post. Later than I meant to be, as usual :)

I spent most of the day working on a variety of writer related stuff, not least collecting pet pictures. Some I had, some I asked for or went in search of. So, since I now have tons of animals to post on here, watch where you step...

Tomorrow, I'll be putting up my (late) column at Novelspot. If you go there now, you'll be able to read my past few months' worth of columns, but tomorrow afternoon, I'll have a new one up. My column-Monthly Monster or Myth--takes a look at whatever creature has my attention at that time. I talk about whatever it is,  and then I try to figure out where the thing came from, or what inspired folks to believe it, anyway. This month (or last month, as the case may be) the column is about the phoenix. It was inspired by my parrots.

Okay, actually, I have a Green Cheeked Conure, which is a sort of parrot, and my daughter's Nanday Conure is staying with us.

Banana joined our family through my daughter's boyfriend. I hope they never break up. I love the guy like the son I never had, so I'd like him to stick around. I'm sure my daughter would like it, too.

Having said that you've got to know that it would break my heart if Banana went away. I know he'll move home to my daughter's place soon. But for now, I'm enjoying his company -- usually. He does make a racket when he wants to. He also likes Harry Belefonte (The Banana Boat Song--go figure), several Eastern European singers, Tom Waits, Toby Keith, Kid Rock, Dean Martin, and Frank Sinatra, to name a few. He has very eclectic taste in music.

This little guy is Baker. He's about a year old now, and what a nut.

When he speaks, you can barely hear him, but don't make the mistake of thinking he's quiet. He has his moments if silence, sure. However, he's a mimic for odd or loud noises. His favorite this week is the high-pitched squeal of metal against metal when I move my wheelchair's footplate up and down. He likes to blow loud kisses if you're not paying attention to him, and he can sound exactly like a squeaky rubber dog toy--when he feels like it. He won't do it when you want him to. It has to be on his terms. *sigh* My daughter thinks I'm making it up.

The birds are great company, but they aren't very cuddly. That's why I have cats.

Roland is the only male cat surrounded by females. He's had his wires snipped, of course, but he's still pretty aggressive.

I know he looks sweet, but he's asleep. Keep that in mind.
On the other hand, he's a great sleeping cat. Very cuddly. But he licks. I don't like that. Roland is the Denis the Menace of cats. If he finds something that bugs you, he'll keep it up, just to see how long you can stand it. He can't help it--he's a guy.

Roland is a very big cat, twenty pounds and three feet without the tail--four-and-a-half, with. His sister, KitKat, outweighs him by almost ten pounds, though. She doesn't take crap from anyone.
She beats Roland up whenever she thinks he needs it, or if she thinks he might need it soon. Why take chances, I guess... She loves soda--they both do. Club soda is her favorite and I never leave a cup of it out (that's my preferred cold drink) She's a good sleeping cat, too, but not as huggable. Still, she's mighty warm in the wintertime.

Tomorrow, I'll show you my other furry house-mates. My sister also has a couple of cats and a dog. It's wild kingdom around here. Sometimes it even sounds like the jungle, what with the birds calling and the cats growling.

In the past, Cosmo was a great inspiration to me. A lot of my characters borrow from his personality. The rest of the animals contribute though.

Tomorrow, I'll post some bits and pieces from the duets I'm working on with Ashley Marie Lucas, along with one of the covers. I'll have some other things to share, too, so I'll look for you then.

Have a great Monday morning. I'll see you in the afternoon :)

BLOG HOP POST #1

Is it hot enough for ya?
I say--I say: is it HOT enough for ya?

Don't you hate that? We know it's hot. Everybody knows it's hot. It's the 4th of July for crying out loud. It's supposed to be hot.

Now that we have that out of the way…I'm going to natter on about being behind again. Natter on--a perfect way to say whine, complain, carry on ad nauseam, but don't do much more than talk about something. I have a good friend who's British and he gets a kick out of my love of language, accents, all of that--especially when his slang creeps into my speech.

Back to the subject at hand--I'm behind on my work. It's taking me all day to post this Blog Hop post. Just about everything reminds me of Cosmo these days, and how long we were together. I was talking to my daughter recently about how several of my friends lost their longtime companions in April or May of this year, last year, and the year before. For some reason, Springtime seems to be the season for it.

I don't think we realize how much our animal companions impact our lives. I thought I'd introduce you all to the best friends (or new family members) that many of my closest friends have taken into their lives. I think the Independence Day holiday is a good time for it--Summer includes frolicking around with our furry friends right? Or not frolicking, as the case may be.

First, I want you to meet Hope, my friend Amy's little girl.  She and I have been close friends since 1999. Wow--didn't some guy write a song about that? (Lord knows we have a good time when we get together)  Anyhow, nothing says "4th of July" like a wet dog, huh?

And who doesn't need a little hope (or Hope) in their life? She's a real nut, I'm told. Nobody will ever take Paige's place, but Amy loves her and she loves Amy right back

And here we have Rocco, my neighbor Tom's new black Lab. He's such a cutie, and he's crazy about his new papa--and you can bet it's reciprocal. It's been over two years since Tom's constant companion Nike died.

He got Rocco the day before yesterday.

This little guy is Loki. From what I hear, he lives up to his namesake (the god of mischief). He's been adopted by my friend and promo goddess, Tina. Her best four-legged friend died the same time as my Cosmo, and she's missed him terribly. Loki seems to fit right in, doesn't he?

My British actor friend also has a dog--that and coffee were the two things that inspired our meeting, at five o'clock in the morning at a hotel Starbucks--we've remained friends since then. His dog at the time was the spitting image of Cosmo. Time has ambled on and both our dogs are gone now. He's gotten a new one--a Lab/Shepherd mix. This is what the little guy looked like as a puppy.

You all know about my good friend Sasha, right? we've been pals since forever--or 2004--which is a long time in writers' years. Well, here's her feline friends, Mystery,

and the younger woman, Scarlet.

They keep her on her toes, I know that. Mystery was always the queen. I imagine that little Scarlet gave her a run for her money. LOL

I have my cats and birds, and my sister's dog to keep me company most of the time. I love them all dearly. And best of all, they give me someone to talk to when I'm thinking out loud. Who can ask for more than that?

My buddy Tina (Loki's new mummy) and I have some duets planned. One of them will kick off a series that draws heavily on animal habits and behaviors. I think you know what that's all about, don't you?

If you don't, stay tuned. I'll be back in a couple of hours (really I will) to tell more about all of that.

While you wait, check out other authors' blogs. Here you go--click on that picture down there:

Don't forget, every comment puts you in the drawing for books or a necklace. 1 comment = 1 entry --because that's just how I do things.

You can expect some book talk later. I've got lots to tell you.
back soon :) J.J.
